Concern for Cardinian Students

Concern for Cardinian Students

Member for Narracan, Gary Blackwood, has said a failure to redefine the metropolitan and regional boundary will lead to significant issues for students in Cardinia Shire who travel to Baw Baw.

Mr Blackwood said that while students going to the same school would be able to return to education settings, those from Cardinia would be excluded from their sporting teams, social activities and other services because they were required to follow metropolitan rules while in regional Victoria.

‘We have a large number of students who travel every day from towns such as Bunyip, Garfield and surrounds in Cardinia to Baw Baw Schools including Drouin and Warragul, will be able to take part in classes but not compete with their friends on the sporting field,’ Mr Blackwood said.

‘While in regional Victoria, students can only be here for education.

‘They are required to follow Step 1 rules unless at school.

‘That means if they live in Cardinia, but are part of a soccer club here in Warragul, while their friends can return to competition, they cannot.

‘The decision by Daniel Andrews not to review rural townships of Cardinia has resulted in a greater divide than ever for these students and I am concerned about the health impacts this will have on them.

‘The Premier hasn’t even had the decency to respond to my messages to him regarding the situation. Only Professor Sutton responded.

‘For Daniel Andrews to not even review this decision or listen to these communities and provide a response to their concerns is disgraceful.

‘Communities deserve to know if any work has been done by the Andrews Government to review the boundary, and if it has not, be told why the Government doesn’t think their situation warrants a review.

‘The Premier needs to look beyond metropolitan Melbourne to these inner rural communities and provide an appropriate response.

‘Our kids living in Cardinia, traveling in and out of regional Victoria every day deserve that,’ said Mr Blackwood.
