Member for Narracan Gary Blackwood has said this week’s revelation from the Minister for Public Transport that not one new peak service would be delivered at the completion of the $530 million Gippsland Line Upgrade proved what a farce the project was.
Mr Blackwood has asked the Minister “how many additional daily rail services will be provided to Gippsland commuters as a result of the Regional Rail Revival package when it is completed”.
In response the Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan stated that “upgrades will provide capacity to deliver a 40 minute off peak frequency upon completion.”
‘Today, probably without even realising it, the Minister for Public Transport has told Gippsland commuters that when this massively expensive upgrade is finished, there will be not one new peak morning or evening train service for our region,’ Mr Blackwood said.
‘Peak morning and evening services between Gippsland and Melbourne are what commuters are asking for, not additional non-peak services which don’t address core transport issues facing commuters.
‘Earlier this year the Andrews Labor Government boasted that they had delivered a new daily service to the Gippsland line, which was later revealed to be a late evening train, and now commuters will be left asking how $530 million for off peak services is good value.
‘It’s time the Andrews Labor Government just admitted they have given up on the Gippsland line and confessed to commuters that they are getting a dud deal compared to the massive boost in services that Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong are receiving,’ Mr Blackwood said.
