Businesses are beginning to feel the pinch as power prices skyrocket following the closure of Hazelwood by the Andrews Labor Government earlier this year.
Speaking in Parliament, Mr Blackwood said that an ideological approach by Daniel Andrews towards energy generation was having a massive impact on the cost of doing business in the state.
‘Recently I have been inundated with concerns from local businesses about the increase in their electricity costs,’ said Mr Blackwood.
‘In many cases, businesses that have renewed their electricity contract recently have told me they have been subject to increases anywhere between 200 and 300 per cent.
Mr Blackwood said these numbers were ignored this week by the Minister for Energy who had said if businesses were unhappy with their provider that they should shop around for a better deal.
‘The Minister for Energy is out of touch with business if she believes simply picking up the phone and spending hours on end talking to retailers will alleviate the massive cost increases for power business has recently had.
‘Most business I have spoken to have sought comparative quotes from competing retailers only to find that a minimal difference in price is available, with only a 1 or 2 per cent difference.
‘Even if Daniel Andrews and his Minister cannot see it, it is no coincidence that Hazelwood, a reliable base load power generator closes, and power prices go through the roof.
‘The Andrews Government must take responsibility for the enormous impact of this on the Victorian business community, given they caused the premature closure of Hazelwood and introduced a mandatory uptake of the most expensive electricity onto consumers,’ Mr Blackwood said.
