Member for Narracan, Gary Blackwood, has said a huge increase in criminal offences is a result of the Andrews Labor Government not having a clear agenda on how it will tackle crime and had failed to strengthen legislation to help deter criminal activity.
‘The latest crime statistics show an average 10 per cent increase in crime per 100,000 population however local statistics reveal a greater increase in Baw Baw and Cardinia than the states average,’ Mr Blackwood said.
Mr Blackwood said the Minister for Police Lisa Neville was clearly out of touch with her portfolio and that the Andrews Government needed to refocus its crime agenda to address the astounding rise.
‘Today Lisa Neville has said that the Andrews Labor Government is facing a number of “significant law and order challenges”.
‘These numbers should come as no surprise to the Minister and to brush them off as “challenges” will give no comfort to the local communities who are faced with more dangerous streets under her watch.
‘This is not a small rise or fall in offences; these statistics show increases locally of between 8.4 per cent and 35 per cent. That is simply astounding.
‘The Minister should admit that the Andrews Labor Governments crime agenda is failing and look at what resources and legislation she can provide to support our police and court system to reverse these trends,’ Mr Blackwood said.
