Shadow Minister for Health Georgie Crozier has today visited Warragul to see firsthand the state of upgrades at West Gippsland Hospital.
Speaking in Warragul, Mrs Crozier said patch ups and paint would not provide the best outcome for the community long term and that the time had come for Daniel Andrews to outline what the Labor Government’s plans were for the service.
‘The Victorian Coalition have been very clear about our vision for West Gippsland health care in stark contrast to the Andrews Labor Government,’ said Mrs Crozier.
‘The West Gippsland Hospital is servicing a community far beyond the catchment size it was intended and staff are doing an outstanding job in a building that is well past its used-by date.
‘Daniel Andrews has chosen to fund the bare minimum in upgrades for this hospital and that is now starting to show.
‘The community knows the best solution and the Victorian Coalition know the best solution.
‘A new West Gippsland Hospital is needed and Daniel Andrews needs to state whether that is his preferred solution or will he continue to patch and paint the existing hospital for as long as he is Premier,’ Mrs Crozier said.
Member for Narracan Gary Blackwood said it was the single largest ongoing project in the Narracan Electorate that the community wanted addressed.
‘Every week my office takes calls from residents who are concerned about the lack of real investment in the West Gippsland Hospital,’ Mr Blackwood said.
‘Some community members have suggested to me that Daniel Andrews is deliberately drip feeding funding to keep the service functioning at a bare minimum in an effort to ramp up services at other surrounding hospitals such as Latrobe and Casey leaving Warragul just for emergency, day surgery and births.
‘That cannot be allowed to happen.
‘With our growing population we need a fully serviced hospital that can provide more services into the future, not less as it would seem Daniel Andrews is pushing for.
‘I will always back our West Gippsland Hospital and for the right investment to be made.
‘We need a new West Gippsland Hospital and we need a plan from the Government about how and when it is going to happen,’ said Mr Blackwood.
